A dredger has been taken to Addu City to lengthen the runway and extend Gan International Airport.
Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Shahid Ali told Sun Online that the dredger was taken to Addu about three days ago, and that work was ongoing to take it to the area which is to be extended, on the south of Gan Airport.
He said that the airport will be extended by 900 meters on the side near Feydhoo, and land 350 meters wide will be reclaimed.
Shahid said that efforts are under way to create a channel to allow the boat into the area. He said that this is being done after conducting an environment assessment, and work is ongoing to increase the depth of an existing channel.
Shahid said that it would take about five months to reclaim the area to be extended.
The project to extend Gan airport, reclaim land for a seaplane terminal, and placement of revetments has been awarded to a Dubai company for $11.7 million.
