The best thing in the interest of the nation, would be to support a broad coalition: Azima

Former Attorney General, Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights Aishath Azima Shakoor has said that the best thing in the interest of the nation would be to support a broad coalition, and that she would support the coalition of President Dr Mohamed Waheed in the upcoming presidential election.

Azima, who left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) after she was appointed Attorney General, told Sun Online in an interview today, that ‘everyone must work together’ to ensure that former President Mohamed Nasheed does not win the presidential election.

“Today, I think that the best thing to do would be to support the broad coalition and ensure its success in the election. We can’t let Nasheed become president. What we can do is be united, work together, and make sure that the broad coalition wins the election,” she said.

Azima said that the coalition of President Waheed and some political parties can win the election in the first round.

“If a few more parties join the current coalition, I think we can win the election in the first round. I believe that everyone should join this coalition now, and win the election,” she said.

Azima expressed confidence in President Waheed’s capability in making a coalition work.

“I have no doubt that President Waheed can make a coalition work. He faced serious challenges, and the fact that he has come this far shows his competence,” she said.

Azima said that she does not intend to join any political party, and that her wish is to serve the country.

Azima participated in the first rally held by President Waheed’s coalition last night.
