Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has asked the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office to request for an opportunity to present the evidence collected in relation to the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali as publicly as possible in court, despite the confession by Hussain Humaam Ahmed of H. Lobby.
Humaam confessed to the murder in court today, and said that he murdered Dr Afrasheem by attacking him with a machete.
The commissioner told Sun Online that following Humaam’s confession today, he had asked the PG Office to request for an opportunity to present the evidence collected by the police in relation to this murder as publicly as possible in court, as this is the biggest investigation carried out by the police thus far.
“I believe that the evidence presented by the PG today should be examined in court. That would give a lot of information which has so far been withheld, and people would understand how the events transpired, in detail. It would also help answer a lot of questions,” he said.
In court today, Humaam confessed to the charge of international murder pressed against him by the State, and gave a detailed account of how the murder was carried out. He also mentioned the names of several people who were involved in planning the murder.
Humaam said that he was promised a reward of MVR 4 million for killing Dr Afrasheem, by MNDF Officer Azlif Raoof and another man named Spy.
Azlif was arrested in relation to this case, but later released following a court order.
Humaam said that son-in-law of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik, Abdullah Javid (Jaa), Javid’s brother Janaa and Azlif met with him to plan and discuss the murder.
The commissioner said that investigations are under way regarding the names mentioned by Humaam in court today of additional people who were involved in the murder, against whom no charges have been pressed so far.
He said that the police will investigate whether sufficient evidence exists against them to press charges, but the police will not take any action prior to discussing the matter with the PG Office.
Humaam said in court today that the murder was carried out by himself, Ali Shaan of H. Hicoast, and ‘Nangi’ (a minor). Ali Shaan, however, has denied the murder charges pressed against him by the State.
