Umar Naseer congratulates DRP coalition

Umar Naseer, the former Deputy Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has congratulated DRP and President Mohamed Waheed’s Gaumthee Ithihad Party (GIP) on their recent agreement to form a coalition.

In an interview to Sun today, Umar Naseer said that we are now seeing the formation of a wide coalition and that he is working on bringing more political parties to join the coalition, and that he is currently speaking to Jumhoory Party in this regard.

“Efforts for a wide coalition is ongoing. We wish for as many as people as possible to join President Dr. Waheed’s coalition. We congratulate DRP joining the coalition, and we are also trying to bring in more parties. God willing, a wide coalition is now beginning to form,” Umar said.

Umar refuted the claims by some media sources that he was against the DRP-GIP coalition.

“The reports on some newspaper that I was dissatisfied with certain people coming into the scene, that was not right. What I said was that my supporters should be consulted if Thasmeen was to be appointed as the running mate. As you would, Thasmeen’s character is not something that my supporters and me do not know. So I have to consult my supporters,” Umar said.

He said that no political party in the country would join a coalition with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) as long as Abdulla Yameen is at the front of the party. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) too will not be able to find a coalition partner, Umar said.
