Minor sentenced to jail for providing false statements regarding Dr. Afrasheem murder

The minor charged with providing false statements regarding the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP and prominent religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali has been sentenced to eight months in prison by the Juvenile Court.

The sentence passed by Juvenile Court today states the minor’s confession proves that he had provided false statements to the police in an attempt to deceive them during the investigation of the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

The 16-year-old boy was sentenced to eight months in prison after being convicted of providing false statements.

The Penal code states that a person convicted of providing false statements may be sentenced to a maximum of 1 year in prison, or fined an amount not exceeding MVR 1000, or be sentenced to banishment for a maximum of 2 years or house arrest for the same duration.

The regulation on executing penalties for minors states that minors shall only face two thirds of full penalties prescribed in the law.

The Commissioner of Police said that the minor charged with providing a false statements had kept guard outside the building while the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali was committed.

The State has raised charges against Hussain Humaam of H. Lobby and Ali Shaan of H. Hicoast for the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali.

Following indictment, both persons have denied the charges and requested for the opportunity to appoint lawyers.
