Presidential candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that the party will aim to establish an international ferry terminal in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.
Speaking at a campaign event in Haa Dhaalu Kulhuduffushi as part of the his current campaign travels to Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls, the former president said that MDP has plans to execute major projects aimed at the three northern-most atolls in the Maldives during a MDP government.
“Our aim is to construct an international ferry terminal in Kulhuduffushi. Our aim is to establish a duty free transit harbour. Our objective is to facilitate for the tourists who will come to Maldives once a week, to be able to buy things duty-free, and to find a way to distribute the guests that come through Kulhudhuffushi to to different parts of this area.”
Former president Nasheed also said that the party has plans to construct a city hotel in Kulhudhuffushi and that their vision is to link all the islands in the three atolls via Kulhudhuffushi.
He said that the southern part of India, closest to Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls, are seeing fast progress and economic growth and that it will be their aim to see that the growth of these three atolls are coupled with the growth of southern India.
He said that their policies include bringing Indian tourists to Maldives and fueling the growth through development of guest house businesses in these three northern atolls and that Kulhudhuffushi shall be the center of these plans.
“MDP is able to calculate that about 500 tourists are willing to depart from Cochin and come to Kulhudhuffushi in large ferries, every week. We can calculate that by selling good holidays to these tourists through guest house businesses, we can find a good living for the 50,000 inhabitants of this Bodu Thilandhunmathi atoll,” Nasheed said.
