A man has been fined MVR 100,000 and sentenced to life imprisonment by Criminal Court today, for possession of drugs in Addu City.
The convict is Abdullah Unais of Raihaanuge, Seenu Feydhoo.
The State also pressed charges against Ibrahim Shazleel of Reethigasdhoshuge, Seenu Feydhoo, but he was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. He was accused of diamorphine trafficking.
Unais was convicted because drugs were found in his pockets when he was arrested in the area where Juwey’s Café was located previously in Seenu Maradhoo, at around 23:30 on 7 May 2012.
Criminal Court said that tests had showed that the drugs carried by Unais in his pockets were 21.537g diamorphine (heroin).
Unais was sentenced as per article 103 (c) of the Drug Act, and ordered to pay the MVR 100,000 fine within one month to the Criminal Court.
