MNDF begins search for boat that went missing off Meemu Atoll

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has begun searching for a fishing boat named “Azum” that went missing with two people after departing from Meemu Mulah.

Speaking to Sun, Laamu Atoll Council President Mohamed Rasheed said that the two people travelling on the boat have been identified as Abdulla Waheed of Hiyaleege, Laamu Maavashu, and a person named Hassan from Alif Dhaalu Maamigili.

He said that the information has now been shared with MNDF.

Media Officer for MNDF Captain Abdulla Ali confirmed that the Coast Guard are searching for the boat, but said that efforts have so far have been fruitless.

Captain Abdulla Ali said that the 40 foot boat departed from Meemu Mulak around 08:00 am yesterday morning, en route to Laamu Maavah. He said that last communications with the boat was around 10:15 yesterday while the boat was near Hakuraa Huraa in Meemu atoll.

MNDF said that they are currently searching the islands of Thaa, Meemu and Laamu atolls and that search efforts at sea are also ongoing.

They said that they have now employed an Island Aviation air craft to conduct searches from the air.

MNDF has issued a notice that stated: “A boat named Azum of about 40 feet long, with light green paint. If you recieve information regarding this boat, please contact Coast Guard through toll free number 191, or 339 8898 or 339 5981, or send a fax to 339 1665.”
