The Maldives Media Council (MMC) has held an event at Nasandhura Palace Hotel to mark the World Press Freedom Day.
Speaking at the event, President of MMC Ibrahim Khaleel said that the government has not put in sufficient effort towards developing the media sector in the Maldives.
“Everyone says they work towards ensuring press freedom or that they will do so in the future. But we have not seen any practical effort so far. Show me one journalist who has attained a degree under a government scholarship. There’s no one. I don’t think that the government makes any effort to develop this sector,” he said.
At last night’s ceremony, certificates were handed out to the short course on journalism conducted by MMC some time ago. Journalists also exchanged ideas and discussed the challenges faced in this sector.
World Press Freedom Day is marked on 3 May every year.
