Heavy rain has left several main roads and lanes in Male’ flooded, creating problems for pedestrians and people on vehicles.
The heavy rain which started at around 19:00 subsided after about one and a half hours. It still continues to drizzle.
The Meteorological Service (Met Office) said that heavy rains and thunderstorms can be expected in various regions in Maldives over the next 24 hours.
The Met Office said that winds can be expected at 15 – 16 miles per hour in Male’ region, and winds may gust at 45 miles per hour during showers.
A group of people struggling to walk in the flood on Janavaree Magu, one of the worst hit roads, said that lately Male’ seems to get flooded with the slightest bit of rain, which causes great difficulties for the people.
“This is too much. All the roads are like this. It was much better back when Municipality existed. Now even this has become political. City Council needs to be dissolved, and we need to go back to how it was before. It’s impossible to live in this country now,” one of them said.
Male’ City Council said earlier regarding floods in Male’ that the council neither has the equipment nor the staff to clean the blocked drains on the roads.
