Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla has been elected as the Interim Vice President of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
MP Abdul Raheem was elected to fill the vacancy following the recent resignation of the Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed, who was elected by the party’s national congress.
PPM announced that MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla won the position without a vote from the council as stipulated by the party’s regulation, as only Abdul Raheem had shown interest for the position. He will remain as the Interim Vice President of PPM until the party’s next national congress.
Abdul Raheem also held the position of Vice President during the party's interim period, before the party had held its first congress. There are two Vice President posts in PPM, the other held by the current Tourism Minister, Ahmed Adheeb.
Abdul Raheem contested for the vice president post in the party’s congress and lost by a narrow margin of 33 votes to MP Ilham. Abdul Raheem received 268 votes while recieved Ilham 301 votes.
