Regional Director of Amnesty International calls on President

Regional Director of the Amnesty International South Asian Office, Polly Prescott has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed.

The President’s Office said in a statement issued tonight that during the meeting held this morning at the President’s Office, the President briefed the Regional Director on the government’s efforts towards establishing peace and stability in the country.

President Waheed said that the current government is the first in Maldivian history to function without its own media, and highlighted the importance given by the government to improving human rights safeguards in the country. The President also called on the international community to support the government’s efforts to establish and develop democracy in the Maldives as per the Constitution.

The President’s Office said that Regional Director Prescott noted the great progress made by the Maldives in the fields of human rights and and freedom of assembly and speech.
