Speaker of the Parliament Abdulla Shahid has signed for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) today.
He has since confirmed to Sun of his move to the country's largest opposition party.
When prompted if he had joined MDP, Shahid replied via SMS saying, “true, I have joined today.”
He has also confirmed the news through his twitter account by stating, “I believe in the democratic Maldives built in 2008; will not stand by while opportunists & extremists drag our country back. Today, I join MDP.”
MDP Chairperson and Hulhu-Henveyru MP Reeko Moosa Manik also told Sun today that Speaker Shahid has joined their party and that his membership form has been forwarded to the Elections Commission today.
MDP is scheduled to announce Shahid’s signing during an event planned to be held in Carnival area titled “New Power” this Friday night.
