The motion to dismiss Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) scheduled for today, has been removed from the parliament’s agenda. MP Gasim currently sits in JSC as the MP representing parliament.
MPs protested the removal of the motion at today's session. The Speaker however stated it was the right of the Speaker to remove the motion.
The no-confidence motion against MP Gasim was submitted by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) stating that it is not right for Gasim to sit as member of JSC while simultaneously standing as a presidential candidate for Jumhoory Party.
While the motion to remove MP Gasim from JSC has been taken off the table, yesterday’s parliament meeting saw MPs call for points of order demanding that votes of no confidence must be conducted in secret.
The votes of no confidence against Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and Defence Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim was also postponed yesterday due to the same demand.
The issue of conducting the votes of no confidence in secret is now being reviewed by a parliamentary committee.
An amendment to the parliament regulation stating that votes of no confidence against the President and his cabinet shall be conducted was overruled by the Supreme Court earlier.
