The Maldives Police Service has given three months for people to reclaim their vehicles previously removed from the streets by the police.
The police said that the owners of the vehicles towed over the past five years will be given three months to reclaim their vehicles after they pay the relevant fine, and that this has been announced in the Government Gazette.
Fines for the towed vehicles have been divided into various categories.
For vehicles towed between 31 August 2008 and 14 April 2009, the fine includes the cost of towing the vehicle, and an amount for each day for 11 days from the third day since the announcement was made that the vehicle had been towed.
For vehicles towed between 14 April 2009 and 4 January 2012, the fine for the initial offence is MVR 250. The second offence carries a fine of MVR 500 while every repeated offence after that carries a fine of MVR 750.
The police said that the vehicles will be destroyed if they are not reclaimed within three months.
