The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has expressed concern over threats to journalism in the Maldives following the attack on DhiTV building.
A Press Release by IFJ yesterday says, “The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is deeply worried by the attack on the office and studio of DhiTV, a private broadcaster in the Maldives capital of Male’ on January 26.”
They also called for thorough investigations into this matter and encouraged the establishment of “a more conductive climate for the practice of journalism”.
Hostility towards journalists has increased in the Maldives recently. A group of masked men attacked DhiTV building with bricks and broke its windows late in the night on 25 January. In addition, a journalist of MNBC was seriously injured and bricks were thrown at MNBC building during the series of ongoing protests.
