The Utheemu harbour construction project has been officially inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Waheed.
Addressing the people of Utheemu during the ceremony held at the harbour area in Utheemu today, the president said that today is a day of great happiness for the people of Utheemu and all citizens of Maldives. He said that we should commemorate the sacrifice by the beloved people of Utheemu in the fight for the independence of the Maldives.
He said that the harbour would allow the people of Utheemu to leave and return to their island with ease, and also facilitate several other possibilities.
He said that we should stay united and always work towards strengthening our sense of brotherhood and solidarity. He said that failure to do so would create division and allow others to influence us, which could threaten our independence and sovereignty.
The president expressed happiness over the solidarity that exists among the people of Utheemu, and thanked them for their courage, exemplary behaviour and cooperation with the goverment.
At the ceremony, the president was presented the award of ‘the highest honour by the people of Utheemu for the person who provides the greatest service to Utheemu’. The award was presented to the president by Utheemu Council President Asraar Adam on behalf of the people of Utheemu.
