Grades improved by five percent in last year

The grades received by Maldivian students in the O’level examinations of 2011 show an improvement of five percent when compared with that of 2010, says the Ministry of Education.

According to the O’level Analysis Report for 2011 published by the Ministry yesterday, three percent of students received A star, seven percent received A, 16 percent received B, and 29 percent received C grade.

The Report also says that number of students who received U grade or failed the exam was reduced to seven percent when compared with 2009.

The Ministry said that improvements were made in the four compulsory subjects namely English, Maths, Dhivehi and Islam when compared with 2008. Results in Islam had improved by 10.3 percent, Dhivehi by 17.2 percent, Maths by 12.1 percent, and English by 12 percent.

Last year, the most significant success was achieved by students of science stream.

Education Ministry further said that students who passed five subjects increased by 60 percent in 2009. Last year, 23 schools achieved this and when compared with 2010, 87 schools showed improvement in this aspect.

Furthermore, the top ten includes 88 more students this year when compared with 2008. 362 students made it to the top ten last year.

6432 students from 184 centers participated in the Cambridge O’level examinations last year.

While results of government schools are seen to improve, students who get low grades in the mock exam are not given the opportunity to participate in the O’level exam as candidates of government schools. According to parents, they have to write the exam as private candidates.
