Five people sustained injuries on Saturday, after a massive fire broke out on a fishing boat off Kurumba Maldives, a resort located close of the Maldivian capital, Male’.
The incident was reported to the police at around 2:54 pm Saturday.
According to the police, the boat had been travelling with 15 people when the fire broke out.
Five of them sustained injuries in the incident, and were transported to Male’ on a boat from Kurumba.
The police identified the injured as two Maldivian citizens and three expatriates.
While the police confirm all five are being treated at hospital, they have not disclosed the extent of their injuries.
Earlier photos and videos taken by witnesses showed the back of the boat, where the engine is located, engulfed in flames, as people were seen moving inside the boat. But later videos showed the fire spread throughout the boat.
Firefighters from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) managed to control the fire by 03:39 pm.
However, the cause of the fire is unclear at this point.
