Maldives and Germany have held bilateral talks with discussions focusing on diversifying mutually beneficial cooperation on bilateral and multilateral fronts through increased high-level dialogue and formal agreements.
The talks were held as part of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing official visit Germany at the invitation of German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The visit marks the first official visit to Germany by a Maldivian president at the invitation of a German counterpart and coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The talks were held at Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the President of Germany, on Tuesday. It was led by President Muizzu and President Steinmeier, with senior members of the governments of the Maldives and Germany in attendance.
Prior to this, President Muizzu was accorded an official welcome at the Schloss Bellevue, where he was received by President Steinmeier. Both Presidents reviewed the Guard of Honour, followed by the introduction of the visiting delegation and German officials. President Muizzu then signed the Visitors’ Book at Schloss Bellevue and participated in an official photograph with his German counterpart.
Also on Tuesday, President Muizzu attended the Maldives–Germany Business Roundtable held in Berlin.
During the event, the President addressed German business leaders, outlining the Maldives’ Vision 2040 to strengthen the economy, modernise institutions, and promote sustainable growth. He highlighted financial reforms, improved foreign exchange access, digitalisation, fiscal discipline, and deficit reduction, noting that official reserves have reached a historic high, boosting investor confidence. He also pointed to investments such as Google’s support for digital connectivity. Emphasising opportunities in renewable energy, tourism, healthcare, and financial services, he invited German investors to participate in Visit Maldives Year 2027 and projects like Solar City and Project Ayla, describing Germany as a natural partner in the Maldives’ development.
In addition to this, on Tuesday, the President also attended the official reception held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany.
He also met with Maldivians residing in Germany where attendees were given the opportunity to speak with the President privately, where they were able to raise any issues of concern.
