President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the government’s main project is to establish and strengthen democracy in the Maldives.
Speaking at a ceremony held last night to celebrate the 62nd Republic Day of India, President Nasheed said that Maldivians have much to learn from the way the Indian Constitution was formed and the way in which it is implemented today.
The President said that the prime challenge faced in strengthening democracy in the Maldives is the establishment of an independent and fair judicial system. He also thanked the Indian government and people for the assistance accorded to the Maldivian government in the efforts to strengthen democracy.
The Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Mr Dnyaneshwar Mulay also spoke at the ceremony. In his speech he highlighted the close relations between India and Maldives.
The President and his wife were also among spectators during the performance of several Indian traditional shows at the ceremony last night.
