The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has confirmed that some whistling pine trees are being cut down in Hulhumale due to construction challenges.

The removal of trees in the first phase of Hulhumale has sparked public concern, with residents noting that the pines were among the first trees planted on the reclaimed island and have become symbolic of its natural beauty.

One social media user expressed worry that the tree cutting would diminish Hulhumale’s comfort and shade, noting that the trees are being removed at night and that only small patches of shelter remain along Fithuroanu Magu, a road named after the pine trees that once lined it.

Another commenter said they hoped to replant trees in the area once construction is complete.

Speaking to Sun on Sunday, HDC said the trees are being removed only in areas where construction work is obstructed. The corporation added that new trees will be planted in other parts of Hulhumale as the project progresses.

In 2023, HDC also removed large trees on both sides of several roads in Hulhumale due to road damage. Similar concerns were raised last year when old trees near the Atoll shops were cleared during the construction of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Male’.
