Attorney General Ahmed Usham has said the Maldives has consistently prioritised creating an environment where children grow up feeling accepted, respected and heard.

Speaking at the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s review of the Maldives’ combined sixth and seventh periodic reports, Usham said children represent the country’s future, and their safety and dignity must always be upheld.

He said the Maldives will continue to prioritise ensuring that every child grows up in an environment that embraces their views and guarantees protection, wellbeing and respect.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the report submitted by the Maldives outlines the country’s implementation of the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which the Maldives became a party on 11 February 1991. The submission also details the Committee’s previous recommendations and the work carried out in the Maldives from 2016 to November 2021.

The Maldivian delegation responded to the Committee’s questions on the country’s progress during the two‑day review session.

The delegation included Attorney General Usham, Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan, and officials from the Attorney General’s Office, Foreign Ministry, Social Affairs Ministry, Education Ministry, and the Maldives’ Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
