Two wrongs cannot combine to form good: Press Secretary

Mohamed Zuhair, Press Secretary of the President’s Office said that it was a wrong when the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) blocked the Majlis, and that it is a wrong, if it is done again by Divehi Rayyithunge Party’s (DRP) Z-faction.

Speaking to reporters Zuhair said that it would not be acceptable even if the parliamentary group of ruling MDP tried to stop the works of the parliament. He also said that the government will not accept such an act. Zuhair requested Z-faction not to block the works of the committees in the parliament.

“Even if Mr. Nasheed did something wrong, Mr. Gayyoom cannot do the same saying that it has also being done by Mr. Nasheed. So I am asking the members who are loyal to former president, and I am asking former president too not to try to stop the parliament on Monday.” Mr. Zuhair repeated the words of President Nasheed in his last Radio address.

Construing the meaning of the president’s statement earlier which said that “blocking the parliament was blocking the state”, Mr. Zuhair said that the President meant that blocking the Majlis would hold off necessary bills being worked on. He said that when a lot of important bills were stuck in the parliament, a blocking of the Majlis was tantamount to the state being in a deadlock.
