City Council goes to court following notification to hand over Usafasgandu

Male’ City Council has submitted a case to court requesting that the notice sent by the Housing Ministry to the council on the 25th of last month, notifying that the Usfasgandu be cleared and handed over to the Ministry within a period of seven days, be declared as void.

Male’ City Mayor Maizan Ali Manik (Alibe) said that the case was submitted to Civil Court today.

He said that since the previous Civil Court ruling stating that Usfasgandu be handed over to the Housing Ministry was declared void by the High Court, it entitles the council to have authority over the area and that this also disallows Housing Ministry to issue orders that the area be cleared.

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that he sought proper consultation from the Attorney General regarding the High Court order before issuing the notification upon City Council to clear Usfasgandu.

The High Court ruling regarding the Usfasgandu issue states that if City Council fails to utilize it according to laws and regulations, the courts do not have to be pursued to reclaim the area.
