Sanitation facilities will be established in Maamigili this year: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that efforts to establish sanitation facilities in Adh. Maamigili will commence this year.

The president said this while speaking at the ceremony held in Maamigili to inaugurate Maamigili Airport as an international airport.

Maamigili Council President Junaid Ibrahim said that the island was in great need of a proper drinking water system.

President Waheed said at the ceremony that the agreement made with Villa Air for Maamigili Airport also includes the establishment of a good standard hospital in the region. He said that the agreement would facilitate progress for the health sector.

He said that the opening of the airport would contribute to the growth of the country’s economy as well as the aviation sector. He also said that a major objective of making the airport an international airport was to improve the country’s transport network and the tourism industry.

He said that Maamigili Airport would also help reduce the traffic at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.

“As tourism expands in the country, facilitating travel to various parts of the country would be a great development for the tourism sector. It would greatly benefit the citizens living in areas visited by tourists, thereby aiding development. The progress of the tourism sector would increase the number of private jets coming into the country.”

President Waheed also thanked the Chairman of Villa Group, Mr Gasim Ibrahim for his hard work in establishing Maamigili Airport.
