No extra generators are needed after Wednesday’s fire, and the existing engines and panels remain in working order, the L. Gan Fenaka branch said Thursday night.

The fire broke out at 14:45 hrs Wednesday at the powerhouse in Gan, the largest island in the Maldives with a population of around 5,000. No one was injured, but the engine room and roof of the power plant were damaged.

Electricity was restored to the entire island by midnight.

Speaking to Sun on Thursday, the Gan Fenaka branch said that while no additional generator is required, the power plant itself will need to be rebuilt.

“The engines, panels and stuff are OK,” an official said.

Police said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fenaka, in a statement, confirmed that one of the five engines supplying electricity to the island was damaged in the fire. The company said it has identified the problems caused by the incident and is working to resolve them.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the Gan branch added that technical work is ongoing following Wednesday’s incident.
