Acting Minister of Transport Mohamed Nazim has said that an agreement were made on developmental projects in the region prior to granting permission to make Maamigili Airport an international airport.
Speaking at the special ceremony held in Maamigili to inaugurate the airport as an international airport, Nazim said that under the agreement, in addition to the fees paid to the government, Villa Air should also undertake several developmental projects in the region.
Nazim said that this includes providing assistance to the Adh. Health Centre and developing the airport to Code Delta standard within three years.
“Maamigili Airport has today been launched as an international airport under an agreement signed between the Maldivian government and Villa Group. In addition to the fees paid to the government, I would like to note that the agreement also includes some services to be provided to the citizens of this region,” he said.
Nazim said that in the future, the Maamigili Airport runway will be used as an alternative runway of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport. He said that the government’s policy is to expand aviation as much as possible.
Chairman of Villa Gasim Ibrahim expressed happiness over the launching of Maamigili Airport as an international airport, and said that he works for the benefit of the Maldivian people.
