The government’s flagship “Housing for All” policy was officially launched on Sunday evening by Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib.

The policy aims to address housing needs across income groups, with 7,000 flats and 15,000 plots of land to be allocated under various models. These include affordable housing for middle-income families, rent-to-own options for those unable to purchase homes outright, and direct housing support for families assessed to be without shelter.

The initiative will prioritize residents of Male' and those who have lived in the capital for at least 15 years. Eligible applicants include individuals registered in the city registry, long-term residents, and those who have never owned land.

Land plots will be distributed from newly reclaimed areas such as Rasmale', with additional housing units planned for Hulhumale' Phase III, Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Lagoon, and Uthuru Thilafalhu. The Rasmale' reclamation is described as the largest of its kind in the Maldives, with accelerated dredging underway to meet the five-month target for plot allocation.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that no previously allocated plots will be revoked, and that reclamation efforts are being carried out to fulfill earlier commitments. Agreements have already been signed for 825 housing units across 13 islands, with financing secured. An additional 4,000 flats will be developed under India’s line of credit, alongside other international partnerships.

The policy reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Maldivian aged 18 and above has access to housing, with further details expected in the coming weeks.
