Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muthalib has said the government’s newly launched “Housing for All” policy is specifically designed to prioritise families without any housing.
Speaking at the launch event on Sunday evening, Muthalib said the policy reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to ensuring that no family is left behind in the pursuit of secure housing.
“Tonight’s policy is for families without homes. For those who move from one rental to another. Families with children who have never felt the security of having their own place,” Muthalib said.
He described the slogan “Housing for All” as more than a political catchphrase, calling it a promise from a sincere president who aims to include every family.
While acknowledging that not every Maldivian family is wealthy, Muthalib said the government’s goal is to provide housing security for all. He envisioned homes that foster love, care, and lasting joy.
The minister also noted that the policy includes pathways for those who can afford to purchase homes in the real estate market, but its core objective is to offer dignified housing opportunities to every Maldivian family.
Under the policy, the government will allocate 7,500 flats and 15,000 plots of land to both affluent and low-income families. Priority will be given to those without private housing.
The housing crisis remains one of the most pressing issues in the Male' area, where many families live in rental accommodation and spend large portions of their income on rent. Although previous governments have distributed land and flats, public concerns over unfair allocation and corruption have persisted.
