ACC will have no rest during my government: Yameen

Progressive Party of Maldives candidate for the presidential primary Abdulla Yameen has said that while corruption in the Maldives is at an extreme high, his government will bring people who commit such acts before the law, and that Anti-Corruption Commission too, will not have rest in this regard, during his government.

Speaking at a function held in Kalaafaanu School last night to address the people of Henveyru, Yameen said that work must be done in great haste to bring corrupt people to justice. He said that as money the embezzle belongs to the people, it must be duly returned to the people. Yameen said that Anti-Corruption Commission shall work unbiased to accomplish such objectives.

“We continuously hear of the country’s treasury being used for corrupt gains. These stories have been passed down through time, constantly heard like the “Alif-Laila” story. We have designated independent institutions to such tasks in our constitution. There is no doubt that the ACC does acceptable work presently as well. In my government, the ACC will not have any rest. They will have to keep standing, and continue to work,” Yameen said.

He said that if the institutions stall in doing their job, he would knock on their doors and that they will have to answer or else, the state will fail to function.

He said that he will provide all administrative assistance required by the judges who work in the judiciary, but said that in return, the judges would have to hold steadfast in carrying out their responsibilities in providing justice to the people.

Expressing his plans for the education sector, Yameen said that more focus must be given to vocational and technical education within the syllabus.

“While we shape the education syllabus, we have to put in a special effort, to give technical or vocational education. Our children face the job market after they complete their studies. Our children do not complete their studies just to stay at home until opportunity come and knocks on their doors. We don’t have time for that. The mothers do not have time to keep searching for a job after putting their children through ten to twelve years of schooling. This is a painful ordeal. In this regard, God willing, during my government, the mothers will not have to come and knock on my door,” said Yameen.

While not all children who finish school will have the opportunities to go for higher studies, Yameen said efforts must be made towards equipping such children with productive skills. He said that his government will give a special focus to establishing institution that teach tourism, to an international acceptable standard.

“From what I have noticed, the sector capable of most progress in the Maldives is the tourism industry, and our government will aim to provide these children to study tourism studies and hospitality, to a standard that will make us proud internationally, God willing, by building such an institute in the Maldives,” said Yameen.

Yameen met all individuals who attended last night’s function, and discussed the changes that Maldives need to see.
