Fuvahmulah City Council, on Tuesday, states the city has received a shipment of drinking water amid the ongoing disruption of water service in the city, with efforts presently underway to distribute water to households.

The disruption of water services at Fuvahmuhlah, a city with a population of some 11,000 people, was prompted by a major leak in the main distribution line on Monday.

Speaking to Sun on Tuesday, Fuvahmulah north-west constituency councilor Aishath Abdul Gadir said drinking water has been supplied to Fuvahmulah by the government, in collaboration with Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), with efforts now underway to distribute water to households in need.

Aishath noted that efforts are ongoing to resolve to the issue that disrupted water service.

“Most likely, it will be resolved within two days, or even quicker,” she said when asked how long it will take to fix the issue.

Aishath added that residents of the Dhandimagu district who lack access to well water currently only have water with an unpleasant odor. Hence, she said the Council was working on resolving the issue using oxygen pump.

Fenaka first announced the temporary suspension of water service in Fuvahmulah City from 13:00pm on 18:00pm on Monday, citing it was required to fix a major leak in the main distribution line. In a later update, Fenaka stated that chlorine is being added to the water network for cleaning purposes, and advised residents not to use the water during this period as it is not safe for consumption.

Fenaka also reminded customers to turn off water purifiers during the outage and apologized for the inconvenience.

Fuvahmulah City Council released a statement following this, stating it has brought the issue to the attention of the relevant government authorities as efforts to resolve the issue continue.
