Fathimath Inaya, who was dismissed from her post as Foreign Secretary back in May, has been reappointed to the post.
Inaya was appointed Foreign Secretary at state ministerial level on December 12th, 2023. Her appointment marked the first time for a woman to be appointed to the post in the Maldives.
She was dismissed from her post on May 5th. The reason for her dismissal was not disclosed.
Sun has learned that Inaya was reappointed to her post a week ago. Following her dismissal in May, the position had remained vacant until her reappointment.
As the Foreign Secretary is a presidential appointee, the president holds the authority to dismiss them at his discretion.
The Foreign Secretary is chosen from among the secretaries within the Foreign Ministry. Although appointed to the role of Foreign Secretary, the individual will retain their secretary post within the ministry.
As a central figure in shaping and executing a nation's foreign policy, the Foreign Secretary plays a crucial role in managing diplomatic relations. They represent the country on international platforms, develop and implement foreign policy strategies, oversee the operations of embassies, and serve as a key advisor to the head of state on matters of international relations.
The Foreign Secretary's post is the second-highest post within the Foreign Ministry hierarchy, after the Foreign Minister.
