Maldives signs political dialogue MoU with Egypt

The governments of Maldives and Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on political dialogue on Saturday, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations. The agreement was signed at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in Cairo, with Foreign Minister Abdullah Khaleel representing Maldives and Dr. Badr Abdelatty signing on behalf of Egypt.

While the Maldivian Foreign Ministry did not disclose detailed terms of the agreement, it confirmed that Khaleel and Abdelatty discussed enhancing cooperation between the two countries. According to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf, the ministers explored opportunities in tourism, education, trade, and cultural exchange.

Khaleel is currently on an official visit to Egypt and is expected to meet with senior government officials during his stay. Diplomatic relations between Maldives and Egypt were formally established on February 12, 1969.

The MoU follows a similar agreement signed with the Philippines last month. Such memoranda are designed to outline key areas of collaboration and provide frameworks for effective implementation of joint initiatives. They also serve to reinforce diplomatic ties and expand cooperation across various fields.
