A memorial honoring Corporal Hussain Adam, who was martyred in the 1988 invasion of the Maldives, has been inaugurated in his native island of Kulhudhuffushi City.
The monument was officially opened on Monday by Kulhudhuffushi Mayor Mohamed Athif, Hussain Adam’s cousin Ahmed Adam, and two family members, Aishath Yumna Ahmed and Fathimath Neem Abdul Rasheed.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Athif said the price of freedom is never free, and that Hussain Adam’s sacrifice, along with those who lost their lives on November 3, 1988, was the ultimate cost of the country’s independence.
He noted that the northern atoll has historically played a vital role in defending the nation, referencing Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the hero who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese rule, as a son of Utheem in Haa Alif Atoll.
“The heroes of this atoll have always stood at the forefront of every battle to protect the country,” Athif said.
The memorial houses a seven-foot replica of the AK-47 rifle used by Hussain Adam and is located in the former port area, where he last departed Kulhudhuffushi before the fatal attack.
The Kulhudhuffushi City Council spent MVR 900,000 on the design and construction of the building.
