A monument honouring Corporal Hussain Adam, who was martyred in the 1988 coup attempt, will be inaugurated this year on Victory Day, November 3.

The structure, located in Kulhudhuffushi’s former port area, marks the site where Hussain Adam last departed the island before sacrificing his life in defence of the nation.

South Kulhudhuffushi Councillor Rilwan Mohamed said the monument features a seven-foot replica of the AK-47 rifle carried by Hussain Adam during the attack. The pillars flanking the monument’s gate will bear bullet hole patterns replicating those from the day of the assault.

The monument sits within a landscaped roundabout, with trees in green and red and a glittery floor design. It was funded entirely by the Kulhudhuffushi Council, which allocated MVR 900,000 for the project. All construction work has been completed except for the installation of the name board, and final preparations are underway for the surrounding road.

The inauguration will be led by Hussain Adam’s family.

Victory Day commemorates the defeat of a joint force of Maldivian dissidents and armed mercenaries from the People's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), who attempted to overthrow President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on November 3, 1988. The coup was thwarted with the intervention of the Indian army, which deployed troops at the request of the Maldivian government, restoring control and repelling the attackers.
