Man arrested in Nolhivaram drug case after joint police operation

A man has been arrested on Thursday in connection with a drug case following a joint operation by the Kulhudhuffushi City Police Station and HDh. Nolhivaram Police Station, police said in a message sent to the media.

The arrest was made based on intelligence that the suspect was attempting to smuggle drugs into HDh. Nolhivaram. The suspect, Ali Rasheed, a 48-year-old resident of Nolhivaram, was taken into custody on October 29.

According to police, the arrest was made after officers searched a box and a can brought ashore from a boat and discovered two packets of suspected narcotics.

Ali Rasheed was presented before the court and has been remanded for 15 days pending further investigation.

Police said the case is still under investigation.

Drug-related crimes remain one of the Maldives’ most pressing social issues, with 1,615 cases reported to police so far this year.
