First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called on all women, particularly those aged 40 and above, to undergo annual mammograms and remain vigilant about the signs of breast cancer.

She made the appeal while speaking at the opening ceremony of the sixth Breast Cancer Awareness Symposium, where she emphasized that health is not a burden, but a right. Sajidha noted that many women tend to neglect their own health and urged them to prioritize early detection.

Reflecting on the emotional and physical toll of cancer, the First Lady said that each patient’s journey is unique, and that the courage shown by survivors and their families continues to inspire improvements in care. “That courage,” she said, “is the driving force behind strengthening early detection protocols and enhancing the quality of treatment.”

Sajidha also highlighted recent improvements in the healthcare system, particularly the shift toward a multidisciplinary approach. She noted that cancer patients now benefit from integrated care involving oncologists, surgeons, mental health professionals, dietitians, physiotherapists, and palliative care teams, working together to improve outcomes and reduce suffering.

The symposium brings together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and cancer survivors to discuss inclusive care, risk identification, and the latest innovations in treatment. This year’s theme is: “Every Patient’s Story is Unique; Every Patient’s Journey Matters.”
