Maldives Customs has disclosed the names of 680 individuals and companies who have failed to pay import duties and penalties, topping the list is Sultans of the Seas, which owes MVR 110.2 million.

The company, known for its tourism-related services, is headed by Ali Ahmed, Mohamed Adil, and Imran Ali, according to the national business registry. The second-highest defaulter is Ashraf Rasheed, fined MVR 72.2 million for importing vape products.

Most of the listed defaulters were penalised for illegally importing tobacco and vape items. Customs noted that 72 entities owe MVR 1 million or more.

The list was published following the implementation of new customs regulations on October 16. Under the updated rules, Customs will publicly disclose the names and outstanding amounts of those who fail to pay within the due date. These disclosures will be made every two months.

The government banned vaping last year and nearly tripled the duty on cigarettes as part of its anti-tobacco campaign. Since then, authorities have reported a rise in smuggling attempts involving restricted items.
