South Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi (IB) states he respects the people’s decision in the referendum held to consult residents of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo on whether to remain under the jurisdiction of Addu City Council.

In Saturday’s referendum, Feydhoo voted against forming a separate council, while Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voted in favor of establishing independent island councils.

A letter which IB allegedly sent to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following the referendum is currently circulating on social media. The letter read that he does not accept Feydhoo residents’ decision against forming a separate council and sought to nullify the results of the referendum citing a significant number of Feydhoo residents had not voted.

IB denied he wrote the letter, citing an anonymous X account was circulating a letter with his signature forged. He added that he does not believe in any of the points mention in the letter.

IB stressed that although he supported Feydhoo forming a separate council, he respects the decision made by the residents of the island.

The Elections Commission announced provisional results on Saturday evening:

  • Feydhoo: 616 voted for separation, 1,784 voted against
  • Meedhoo: 847 voted for separation, 144 voted against
  • Hulhudhoo: 623 voted for separation, 329 voted against

A total of 4,493 people voted in the referendum, 47 percent of the 9,576 eligible voters.
