The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdullah Shahid has announced that the party will not allow the reforms it spearheaded in the Maldives to be dismantled by the current government and that it will actively work to halt the "plundering" of state resources.
Speaking at the MDP's "Lootuvaifi" rally at Artificial Beach on Friday evening, Shahid highlighted the MDP's role in introducing peaceful political movements to the Maldives.
He stated that the MDP had brought about significant reforms through peaceful political action, but lamented that these achievements are now "floating away and crumbling." Shahid asserted that the party would not stand by idly and witness this decline.
He emphasized that the MDP has a history of protecting the reforms it brought about and will continue to make sacrifices to uphold them.
Shahid declared that the MDP rally was to "stop the looting" of the state.
"We are the party that dares to say what we have to say and raise our voice. We are the ones who have made, and will make every sacrifice for the good of our country," Shahid affirmed.
Shahid underscored that governmental power originates from and remains with the people.
Hundreds of people attended the rally, filling the entire Artificial Beach area to vocalize their opposition to various corruption allegations against the government and to express the concerns of the populace.
