A youth is being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after sustaining serious injuries following a fall from an areca palm in L. Gan.
A Gan resident who spoke to Sun said the incident took place on Friday night while the youth was on a some 60-foot-tall areca palm on the island’s Mathimaradhoo district to cut down areca nuts.
The resident identified the injured youth as a 28-year-old.
When questioned by Sun, Gan Council President Ahmed Zaki said the youth fell on his back on top of a bunch of rocks, fracturing some five bones from the side of his ribs.
“I have heard that the youth fell after the areca palm he was on to cut down areca nuts broke,” he said.
Zaki said he was transported to Male’ in the early hours on Friday night to treat is injuries.
While the youth was treated in the Intensive Care Unit, Zaki said the youth sustained severe bone fractures on the side of his ribs.
IGMH confirmed that the hospital was treating a 28-year-old man from Gan who was injured in a fall from a tree. The hospital added that he was currently being treated in ward without providing any further details.
