Maldives participates in the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities convened last Thursday to review Maldives’ 2018 report under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with the Maldives actively participating in the session.
The Attorney General’s Office reported that the preliminary report, submitted on April 5, 2010, outlined the Maldives’ efforts to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy rights guaranteed under the Convention from 2010 onward.
Attorney General Ahmed Usham addressed the committee, responding to questions regarding the nation’s implementation efforts.
During the session, Usham emphasized that the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities are inextricably bound up with human dignity, which encourages equal opportunities, full participation and the removal of any skills that impede their full potential. He highlighted the country’s current policy-making strategy, which integrates solutions across all national sectors to promote disability rights, rather than addressing issues in isolation.
The committee is scheduled to present its findings and recommendations on Monday, based on the information provided by the Maldives and the submitted report.
