STO and Makita celebrate 25 years of partnership

The State Trading Organisation (STO) and Japanese power tool manufacturer Makita marked a quarter-century of collaboration on Saturday with a ceremony held at the Kurumba Maldives Resort.

The event recognized the enduring partnership that has contributed to the development of the Maldives’ construction sector and strengthened economic ties between Japan and the Maldives.

Attendees at the ceremony included Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko; STO Managing Director and CEO Shimad Ibrahim; and Makita Director and Corporate Officer of International Sales Headquarters, Omote Takashi. The partnership originated in 1998 when STO introduced Makita’s products to the Maldivian market.

The event featured a display of Makita’s latest power tools, with practical demonstrations in a designated experience zone. Construction professionals and customers were able to observe the brand’s technology, including cordless drills and advanced saws.

STO Construction Solutions Director Mohamed Iman reflected on the history of the collaboration. Plaques of appreciation were presented to key clients who have contributed to the partnership’s success over the years. These organizations included: 

  • Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)

  • Housing Development Corporation (HDC)

  • State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO)

  • Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)

  • Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)

  • Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)

  • Universal Hawks Pvt Ltd

  • Alia Construction Pvt Ltd

  • SJ Constructions Pvt Ltd

In their concluding remarks, Omote Takashi and Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko acknowledged the impact of the partnership. Takashi noted STO’s role in making Makita a recognized brand in the Maldives, while Ambassador Ishigami highlighted the broader significance of the collaboration. The 25-year partnership has not only advanced the construction industry but also deepened the economic and cultural ties between Japan and the Maldives, she said.

Founded in 1915, Makita is a global producer of power tools. Since its introduction by STO, the brand has been utilized in various infrastructure projects across the nation.

The celebration at Kurumba Maldives Resort acknowledged the achievements of STO and Makita and their ongoing commitment to providing tools and services to the Maldivian market.
