Addu on Saturday evening has experienced a city-wide blackout following a malfunction in a power generator.

This was confirmed by Fenaka Corporation's Addu Branch in a Viber group message, notifying the blackout was the result of an engine malfunction and added they were working to resolve the matter at the earliest.

The city's deputy mayor Mohamed Shuau, while speaking with 'Sun' confirmed the blackout occurred around 23:15hrs on Saturday evening.

'They [Fenaka] said they will provide an update after an assessment," Shuau commented.

The city has been facing power cuts and blackouts in a regular basis, which mounted stern public concerns while Addu City authorities had addressed the matter on multiple occasions as well.

Back on March 13, a one-megawatt generator set was brought to the city after which another 1.8-megawatt set was brought in later on March 25 to address the persisting power outage issue. The generator set was commissioned and put up for operations on March 31st.

Both Fenaka Corporation and Addu City Council previously said the city requires a minimum of 15-kilowatt generators to solve the power interruptions.

Most Addu citizens believe the issue will be permanently solved only after the currently in-development power house completes. Although the project was contracted to a Chinese company, it still remains idle.
