The tariff imposed on Maldivian exports is relatively small compared to other neighboring nations. A baseline 10 percent tariff has been imposed on all imports to the US and higher duties on some of the country's biggest trading partners.
Trump has said the tariffs will be used to boost US manufacturing and "make America wealthy again".
Economists have warned that the new tariff rates, which represent the highest percentage increase in the US to date according to Forbes, could stall the global economy.
