North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim has requested to commence postmortem in the Maldives as there is no legal obstacle for it.

The MP has also sent a letter to the Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim following a string of suspicious deaths in the country. The MP said that while suspicious deaths raise public concerns, seven such deaths were reported in the past two months.

The lawmaker emphasized on starting postmortem in the Maldives to address these suspicious deaths and alleviate public concerns.

“There is no doubt that commencing this (postmortem) in the Maldives would save significant expenses from the budget from having to send bodies abroad for postmortem,” the MP commented.

In his letter to the minister, the MP also said that the Criminal Procedure Act outlines the procedure and grants discretion to Maldives Police Service to conduct postmortem in suspicious deaths.

Other key points the MP highlighted in the letter include:

The Regulation on Postmortem Procedures in Investigating Deaths has been publicized

The ‘National Standard for Forensic Medical Service in Maldives’ of the Ministry of Health has been publicized

The Public Health Act gives discretion to the Minister of Health to designate establishments to conduct forensic testing and postmortem

The MP concluded his letter highlighting that there were no legal obstacles hindering the commencement of postmortem in the Maldives.
