Motorcyclist had license withheld; probe whether officer was negligent

Maldives Police Service states the investigation into the collision between a motorbike and a police car on early Friday morning will inquire whether there was any negligence on the part of the officer who was driving the car.

The accident took place in the early hours of Friday morning at approximately 1:50am in Hulhumale’ Phase II. The motorcyclist, an 18-year-old old, sustained serious injuries and is being treated on ventilator support.

In a statement on Friday, Police said the youth involved in the accident had his license withheld over a traffic violation on December 21st.

Citing such dangerous accidents were of extreme concern for the authority, Police underscored they are undertaking significant efforts to ensure the safety of the roads by dedicating substantial resources.

Police added that they will be inquiring whether there was any negligence on the part of the officer who was driving the police car involved in the accident, adding all necessary measures will be taken to ensure such an incident does not repeat.

In an earlier message to the media, the Police said the accident occurred when a motorbike traveling on Nirolhu Magu at high speed, collided with a police car that was crossing Nirolhu Magu at the intersection with Gulalma Goalhi.

The youth has been shifted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’ City after being initially treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital.
