Jinah was likely swimming towards boat, drowned after getting a cramp

Ibrahim Jinah Mohamed, 36.

The family believes that Ibrahim Jinah Mohamed, a young fisherman found dead in the Hulhumale’ lagoon on Monday, had likely drowned after getting a muscle cramp while swimming towards his fishing boat.

The 36-year-old’s body was found floating in the lagoon area near the MNDF Fire Station at around 04:30 pm on Monday. The waters where his body was found is near the Kanneli Jetty in Hulhumale’.

Though originally from M. Maduvvari, Jinah’s family resides in Hulhumale’.

Jinah’s father, Thaufeeq Mohamed told Sun on Tuesday that his son had worked as a yellowfin tuna fisherman. He was the co-captain of the fishing boat.

Jinah’s father and his brother Adlee Mohamed said they last met him on Saturday.

“I met him at around 06:30 pm. I had met him after a long time. We talked here [in my home] and then we left for our mother’s house. He ate from there and then left after a friend from the boat called,” said Adlee.

According to Adlee, another brother of theirs dropped off the friend near Enzi, and then dropped off Jinah near the Kanneli Jetty at around 11:00 pm.

The family does not believe it likely Jinah’s death involves foul play. However, they are unable to say so for certain.

“I cannot say so for certain. I cannot know for certain right?” said Adlee.

Thaufeeq said that while Jinah did not suffer from a serious illness, he was prone to muscle cramps.

“He would often get muscle cramps even while walking,” he said.

Adlee said that as far as he knows, the skipper had called Jinah and told him to come to Hulhumale’ on Saturday, as he needs to leave for his island.

Adlee believes his brother was under a lot of pressure from work.

“I believe it likely he was under pressure due to this. I believe he was at the jetty until around 02:00 am [Sunday]. I believe it most likely that he stood at the jetty until then and finally decided to swim to the boat due to lack of any other option,” said Adlee.

The family believes it likely he got a muscle cramp while swimming to the boat and drowned.

“But only the Almighty Allah knows best,” said Thaufeeq.

Jinah’s body was buried at the Hulhumale’ Cemetery on Monday night.

The family did not want to delay it.
