Polling began on Saturday morning in the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s internal elections, which will see members elect hundreds of party officials.
Voting began at 10:00 am in polling stations in the capital Male’ and 88 other islands. According to the PNC, the party’s members will be casting their ballots into 144 ballot boxes, 52 of which are in the Dharubaaruge of Male’ City.
PNC had opened candidacy for 1,984 top party posts. 1,300 candidates have already confirmed their wins having run unopposed, while 648 candidates are contesting the elections for the remaining posts.
Some 33,500 members of the PNC are eligible to vote in the elections.
Polling is set to close at 02:00 pm.
